Dental implants
What are dental implants ?
A titanium metal rod is screwed past the gum into the jawbone. It is used to support one or more false teeth. Both the false teeth and the supporting rods are known as implants.
Are implants safe ?
A tried and tested method. Most implants last at least 15 years.
I still have some of my own teeth, can I still use implants ?
Yes. You can have any number of teeth replaced with implants. It can be from one, to a whole set.
Can implants always be used to replace missing teeth?
It depends on the state of the bone. Your jaw will undergo special tests to assess bone condition. If there is not enough bone present in good condition, bone grafts may be needed.
Do dental implants hurt ?
Under local anesthetic this procedure needs a small operation with sedation. General anesthetic may also be used. You will not feel any pain during the step of placing the titanium posts. The healing time to follow may be uncomfortable. This is normal due to stitches and is part of the normal healing process. Your dentist will discuss pain medication you may need.
Can I have my new teeth right away ?
Not in less than full restoration. The mouth needs to heal completely from the operation and the implants also need to integrate with the bone. It will grow around the posts holding them fast. This can take a minimum of 3 months in the upper jaw and up to 6 months in the lower. If up to three teeth are replaced temporary false teeth will be given. If a more or complete restoration then you can wear them while you heal, once they are adjusted after the surgery.
What dental implants do you use ?
Our implants are provided by the best in the world, Swedish company Nobel Biocare. This modern company is on the cutting edge of technology and applies the latest techniques and material to their products. We are proud to be associated with them. The implants come with a ten year guarantee.
How long is the process for implants ?
Your first procedures can take up to 7 days. Then your healing time which can take 3-6 months depending on the position and amount of the implants. The second part of the procedure may take 7-10 days dependant on circumstances. Please do visit your dentist if any pain persists. Once crowns are in place comfortably, the work is finished.
What savings will I make?
In comparison to other parts of the world, you stand to make considerable savings. For example in the UK dental implants cost £2000 each to get done. The cost of living is higher, coupled with the severe shortage of dentists this means price are much higher. If you can get in to see a dentist on the NHS, it will be a long wait. Or pay for private health benefits costs which are huge. In Poland the same implants, with the same level of qualified dentists can be done for the equivalent of £500
Is quality compromised to get cheaper prices ?
Absolutely not. In fact our implants are the same as used worldwide. The major factor in lower prices is because qualified dentists are plentiful in comparison. The cost of living and wages is so much lower, so everything is cheaper all around.
Are the teeth difficult to clean ?
Just the same as cleaning on and around normal teeth. Some areas may give you trouble but this will be explained fully by your dentist.
Can I still get gum disease ?
Yes. Improper oral hygiene can still lead to gum disease even with implants. Smoking also plays a major part.
Can I remove my new teeth ?
Most of the artificial teeth attached to the implant can only be removed by a dentist. But if your complete dentures are fixed by bars to the implants you will be able to remove those for cleaning.
Will the implants show ?
Your dentist will not let the implants inside the gums show during normal of the mouth and lips. You will need to be able to see them for cleaning.
Do I need one implant per tooth ?
Only if you are having a single tooth replaced. One implants can support two teeth so five or six may be needed for one all teeth in one jaw. Or two or three for less teeth on same side.
What if I get hit in the face ?
Damage can be sustained in the same way as for natural teeth, so take care. If the false teeth are damaged any remnants left in the bone may be more difficult to remove than natural teeth. New false teeth can be placed alongside the fragments, once healing has occurred.
What if the implant does not bond with the bone ?
These are very rare case scenarios. If the implant gets loose while healing then they are easily removed and healing will be natural. After healing the dentist can try another implant or discuss alternatives such as bridging with you.
Where to go for dental treatment ?
You will need a referral to a specialist for this procedure so talk to your dentist. Many already carry out all or some of these treatments. Make sure you ask questions and are completely clear on the procedure, the possible risk and the long term process. Costs will need to be weighed up and you may want to seek a second opinion. Proper preparation is best when planning to spend a lot of time, money and effort. Make sure your decision is as informed as possible.
